Frank Fonseca with Lori Kader & BSOS Dean, Dr. John Townshend
Congratulations to Frank Fonseca, the 2014 winner of the Department of Psychology's Award for Excellence in Student Leadership.

The Department of Psychology’s Award for Excellence in Student Leadership goes to a student nominated by his or her peers for an outstanding commitment to advancing the opportunities and achievements of fellow psychology majors, students and community members. We are personally proud to announce that the 2014 winner is Frank Fonseca.

In the words of one student who nominated him:

“Frank is the embodiment of student leadership. His empathetic nature drew him to the field, and even as a transfer student he has occupied several important positions, each concentrated in some aspect of helping other psychology majors (through academic advising, Psi Chi events, etc.) Frank is looked up to by many people in our senior class.”

As Vice President of Marketing for Psi Chi's 2013-2014 executive board, Frank volunteered his time to the Department and with BSOS to serve students any way he could, and in doing so has made our Department, our College and our students stronger.

Brandon Bowers with Dr. Scott Roberts
Congratulations to Brandon Bowers who won The Excellence in Student Leadership Award.

Department of Psychology’s Excellence in Student Leadership Award is presented to a student nominated by his or her peers for their outstanding commitment to advancing the opportunities and achievements of their fellow psychology majors. The 2012 award was presented to Brandon Bowers, who as President of the Psi Chi honors society and the Senior Peer Mentor in the office of Undergraduate Studies has transformed the way the office engages and supports our incoming students through a wide and impressive variety of initiatives. Brandon is a natural-born leader and an inspiration not only to his peers, but to everyone who has had the pleasure of working with him.

Congratulations to Katie Goepel who won the research grant!

"I had been volunteering at CAIP lab for a semester, and also been involved in the design aspect of a few upcoming projects with Dr. De Los Reyes and other lab members. I began with some literature searches on topics that interested me and we continued to collaborate. I decided to apply for the $5,000 Psi Chi Summer Research Grant meant to provide a stipend to the student and support for the laboratory, as well as a published abstract in the journal, Eye On Psi Chi.

The application process involved an outline of the goals of the research, how the grant would affect me personally, a letter of recommendation, a letter of support from my faculty sponsor (Dr. De Los Reyes) and a copy of my transcripts.

Putting the actual study together itself from the bottom up was a bit more of a challenge than the application process itself and we have had to make a lot of changes along the way (which I'm learning is to be expected in research). Currently, we have over 70 participants scheduled over the next two months, and we are beginning to run some preliminary analyses of the data.

So far it has been a great first experience in independent research, and I'm looking forward to continuing to collect data this semester. I've really learned a lot from the experience, and I would encourage everyone in Psi Chi who might be interested in an independent project to apply for these grants with their mentor!"
