Psi Chi Meet the Speaker

easternregion_masthead

Psi Chi members,

Psi Chi would like alert your chapter to an exciting, new opportunity for Psi Chi students to enjoy at the Eastern Psychological Association (EPA) Conference this March: Meet the Speaker sessions. Following two talks by the distinguished speakers, a limited number of interested students will attend a more intimate and informal session with a moderator to help them engage with the speaker. The idea is to give Psi Chi students an opportunity to ask questions in a less intimidating atmosphere as well as to learn more about these distinguished psychologists’ research interests, significant undergraduate and graduate experiences that drew them to the field, and gain advice on the development of a career in psychology.

To keep these sessions small, they will be "invitation only" and capped at 20 students per session. Therefore, we ask that chapters select no more than two Psi Chi students from their chapter to attend each session. However, to ensure that as many chapters as possible can participate, we may have to further limit participation to one session per chapter. The two available sessions are listed below.
  1. Saturday, March 2, 10:30–11:50 a.m.
Paul Rozin, PhD (University of Pennsylvania)
Meet the Speaker session: 12:00–1:20 p.m.
“The Aesthetics of Temporal Sequence, and Ten Almost Consecutive Paper Rejections From Psychological Science”
Description: First, a discussion of the criteria used for acceptance for publication in major journals, illustrated by 10 rejections of papers on which Dr. Rozin has been an author in recent years. Second, a discussion of the aesthetics of temporal sequence: how sequences of events like movements in a piece of music or dishes in a meal can be optimally ordered to have maximum impact on both experience and memory.
  2. Saturday, March 2, 12:00–1:20 p.m.
Saul Kassin, PhD (John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Williams College, NY)
Meet the Speaker session: 1:30–2:50 p.m.
    “Why Confession Trumps Innocence”
Description: Several years ago, Kassin pioneered the scientific study of false confessions by developing a taxonomy that is universally accepted and laboratory interrogation paradigms that are used to assess why innocent people confess. He was awarded an APA presidential citation for his research on false confessions and is currently funded by the National Science Foundation.
Saul Kassin is Distinguished Professor of Psychology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and Massachusetts Professor of Psychology at Williams College. He is an author of Social Psychology and several scholarly books, including: Confessions in the Courtroom, The Psychology of Evidence and Trial Procedure, and The American Jury on Trial. Kassin is Past President of the American Psychology-Law Society (AP-LS) and is senior author of the 2010 AP-LS White Paper entitled “Police-Induced Confessions: Risk Factors and Recommendations.” He lectures frequently; has testified in state, federal, and military courts; and has appeared as a media consultant for all major networks.
We hope your chapter members will be interested in this attending one of these events as a benefit to their membership in Psi Chi. If successful, we hope to expand these sessions at EPA in 2014.
To have your students participate in these Meet the Speaker sessions, please e-mail the following information as soon as possible to psychology.society@lehman.cuny.edu

Gilman International Scholarship

Hello All! We here at Psi Chi hope that you had a wonderful New Years and any other holidays that you might have celebrated. If you are taking a winter class, good luck, and if not we hope you're having a nice, relaxing break!

Over break, you may also want to look into Psi Chi's scholarship and grant opportunities. Scholarships are a great way of paying off your education.

Allison Jean, a former Maryland student and Psi Chi member, has reached out and provided us with her experience earning the Gilman International Scholarship. This scholarship is for Pell Grant recipients / U.S. Citizens who are interested in studying abroad. This scholarship can amount up to 5000 dollars toward studying abroad.

Studying abroad is a great way of gaining skills and experiences that will help you in your future career.

Here is Allison's story...

“In Spring 2012, I had the amazing opportunity to study abroad in New Zealand! Without being awarded the Gilman International Scholarship I would not have been able to have this life-changing experience. One of the most rewarding parts to my time abroad was the service project I did for this scholarship. My service project consisted of working with schoolteachers and their classrooms on the cross-cultural based idea of the “Flat Stanley project”. Using the Flat Stanley project was a way to exchange cross-cultural information between an elementary classroom in Maryland and an elementary classroom in New Zealand. This service project gave me the opportunity to not only learn more about the New Zealand culture, but to  gain experience in working with children. As a psychology major, my main interest is child psychology, so this experience was perfect. This scholarship was wonderful because it allowed me creative freedom and the ability to focus my service project based on my interests. Thanks to the Gilman Scholarship I was able to have this opportunity.”

If you have any questions about Allison's experience or the scholarship in general, you can contact her at ajean04@gmail.com

The deadline to apply for summer and fall 2013 and academic year 2013-14 Gilman
Scholarships is March 5, 2013. This information will also be posted in the Scholarships and Grants section of our blog.

For more information:
Contact for University of Maryland: gilman@umd.edu
Scholarship Website: http://www.iie.org/en/Programs/Gilman-Scholarship-Program

Thank you Allison for this very helpful information!
