Awards and Grants!!


Hey Psi Chi! There are still incredible opportunities to apply for more awards and grants!

·      If you want to attend a psychology or psychology-related convention, you can apply for the unrestricted travel grant that will give you up to $1,500!! Applications are due by December 5th!
·      If you want to travel to one of the six regional conventions, you can apply for the regional travel grant that will give you up to$400!! Applications are due by January 15th!
·      Submit your best research at the APA and APS national conventions for a cash award of $300. Apply for the society convention research awards; deadline is rolling!

Events Next Week!

Hope everyone's hanging in there, 2 weeks until finals!

Next week Psi Chi will be hosting two events. The first event is dedicated to benefiting you.

For our chapter meeting, a professor you may be familiar with, Dr. Selterman, will be leading a medication session. This is a great opportunity for Psi Chi members to relax before finals!

When: Tuesday, December 4th 7:00-8:00pm
Where: BPS1142

Our second event is dedicated to helping others. This is your last chance to receive a semesterly service credit toward an active membership. We will be hosting a donation drive forthe Prince George’s County Department of Social Services in order to help out our local neighbors during this holiday season. The PGCDSS is collecting non-perishable food (canned or packaged) and new children’s clothing, shoes, and toys (must still be packaged or with tags).

You will receive credit for donating either three food items or one children’s item. Drop off your donations on Wednesday, December 5th between 5:15pm and 6:30pm in BPS 1142. Please email d.bukreyeva@gmail.com by December 3rd if you need to make alternate drop-off arrangements.

    Service Event & Next Chapter Meeting!


    Donate to A Wider Circle to receive Psi Chi service credit!

    Hello Psi Chi members! As a reminder, you need to participate in a service event each semester in order to maintain an active status in Psi Chi. An upcoming opportunity is to donate to A Wider Circle, a local nonprofit organization benefitting homeless and low-income families transitioning to new homes. TerpCorps is hosting a donation drive this week to collect items, and is also having a culminating event in Stamp this Friday, November 12th, during which you can meet the executive director of AWC in order to learn more about the organization and its service opportunities.

    In order to receive service credit, you need to drop off at least 3 donation items this Thursday, November 15th in BPS 1103 between 4pm and 6pm. Please email d.bukreyeva@gmail.com if you are not able to come then and need to make alternative drop-off plans. Attendance to the culminating event in Stamp is not required, but encouraged for anyone who would like to get more involved with AWC.

    The items that can be donated include the following, and are required to be in dignity condition:
    - Healthy non-perishable food
    - Blankets, sheets, towels, linens
    - Feminine care products
    - School supplies
    - Cleaning supplies

    Representatives from clinical, social, counseling and cognitive science programs will be speaking and answering YOUR questions at our next chapter meeting. Come prepared with questions for the graduate students, or just come to listen! Graduate student panels can be extremely helpful in your preparation for a career in the field of psychology. Learn information about different types of programs and what it takes to get there.

    Do you have an interest in attending a psychology convention, but don’t have the

    Teach for America Meeting - Rescheduled

    We hope all of you got through Hurricane Sandy without any damage. Now that everything is settled down, the Teach for America meeting has been rescheduled for next Monday, November 5th at 6:30pm. It will be located in BPS room 1142, and still include free pizza and soda of course!

    Teach for America, Psychology Roundtable, and Zombies!

    Teach for America is a non-profit organization that recruits recent college graduate to teach for two years in low-income communities through the United States. If you are interested in teaching this could be a great opportunity that will not only benefit you but also underprivileged children. 


    Representatives from TFA will visit us at our chapter meeting and present information on current openings with them. They will also talk about the application process and the deadline for the applications (which is November 2nd). They will discuss about what is like to be working for them and what are some of the benefits that they offer.

    Do you like ZOMBIES? Do like running? If yes, you're in luck! Psi Chi is offering the UMD Habitat for Humanity 5k as a service event that will count toward becoming an active member of Psi Chi. You must be an active Psi Chi member in order to receive the Psi Chi graduation cord or medallion. 

    The run is a 5k, or 3.2 miles. It will take place this Saturday and in the spirit of Halloween, you will be chased by scary zombies throughout the course. The race runs from parking lot XX1 on campus and around Lake Artemesia. The fastest male and female runners receive prizes! Also, the first 50 to register will receive a free t-shirt.

    PSYCHOLOGY EVENT:

    The DC Chapter of the Association of Black Psychologists will host a Careers in Psychology Roundtable on Saturday October 27 from 5p-7p at Trinity University. Trinity University is located at 125 Michigan Ave. NE Washington, DC. The event will be held in Social Hall, which is in the Main Building.

    When: Saturday, October 27th at 5:00pm

    Panelists include: Dr. Adanna Johnson; Dr. Edwin Nichols; Dr. Frederick B. Phillips; Dr. Daryl Thorne; Ms. Nkemka Anyiwo

    This will be an opportunity for professionals and graduate students to talk with undergraduate and graduate students about career paths in psychology. Professionals from different fields will be prepared to share their expertise and development in their respective field.

    Panelists will be asked to: 1) explain their field of work; 2) describe your current work; 3) describe how your work can be applied to helping people of African ancestry. Depending on the number of panelists, each panelist will have 5-7 minutes to speak during the panel and then be asked to join the round tables for questions and answers with the students and professionals afterwards. 

    After the panel, there will be 45 minute round tables where graduate students and professionals will be asked to share their experiences with undergraduate students on the following topics:
    1) how to prepare for a career in psychology 2) the ins and outs of applying to your respective institution; 3) how to obtain funding for graduate school, externships and internships; and 4) how to secure a job as a professional.

    NEW RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY 

    Check out this research opportunity. It could be great experience to prepare you for graduate school :-) It's also paid, which is rare for an RA position!

    Looking for Paid Research Assistants

    General Project Themes:
    I am fascinated by team dynamics and principally study how collective perceptions develop and influence
    team behaviors, influence among members, and performance. Studies in the lab span those on formal and
    informal leadership in virtual teams, to those focused on diversity of member differences (e.g., gender,
    age, or status) on team influence processes, performance, and innovation.

    Responsibilities: Research assistant’s responsibilities might include (based on project, interests and
    expertise):
    • Searching, reviewing, and analyzing existing literature
    • Analyzing interview themes / qualitative data coding
    • Managing and processing quantitative data (e.g., surveys)
    • Supporting survey design, development, and (online) administration
    • Running of lab experiments

    Ideal Qualifications: An ideal fit would be an undergraduate studying psychology or management who
    is interested in pursuing a graduate degree in social and/or organizational research and interested in
    gaining experience in the research process. The ideal candidate for this job will also have:
    • Strong organizational skills and high attention to detail.
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
    • Intellectual curiosity.
    • Strong quantitative skills a bonus.
    • High ethical standards.

    Pay rate, length of role, and exact average time commitment per week to be negotiated, estimating
    $11-13/hour (based on experience).

    Next Chapter Meeting: Guide to Taking the GRE!

    Do you plan on going to graduate school? 

    Anyone who wants to go to grad-school must have official GRE scores before applying. The Princeton Review is going to be hosting our next Psi Chi meeting in order to explain what exactly the GRE entails along with tips and strategies on how to earn a better score and get into the graduate school of your dreams. The Princeton Review will also be raffling off a free GRE preparation course at the meeting. Don't miss your chance!
